Designing a short-term rental is about more than just creating a place to stay—it’s about crafting an experience that guests will remember and want to share. These tips will help your property feel unique, comfortable, and worthy of five-star reviews.

1. Memorable Design Moments

Because guests are only staying a short while, you don’t need to play it safe with neutrals. Short-term rentals are the perfect place to add whimsy and personality—moments that surprise and delight. Think wallpaper in a powder room, bold artwork, patterned rugs, or playful throw pillows. If you’re renovating, go beyond builder-basic finishes: herringbone wood floors, coloured subway tiles, or a mosaic backsplash can instantly elevate your space and make it “Instagrammable.”

2. Luxurious Comforts

Looks get guests in the door, but comfort makes them come back. Invest in a quality mattress and layer it with crisp cotton sheets, a sumptuous duvet, and a mix of down and hypoallergenic pillows. Don’t underestimate the power of details: soft throws, robes, and a selection of teas or coffee elevate the experience from “good stay” to “memorable getaway.”

3. A Thoughtful Guidebook

Hospitality is about making guests feel cared for. A curated guidebook with your favourite local restaurants, shops, and trails helps them settle in quickly. It doesn’t need to be elaborate—just thoughtful. A simple printed copy in the rental plus a digital PDF works perfectly. Bonus: if you can partner with local businesses to offer discounts or insider tips, your guests will feel like they’re getting the VIP treatment.

4. Smart Amenities

Don’t overlook the practical things that make a stay smooth: fast Wi-Fi, easy-to-use appliances, quality cookware, and plenty of charging outlets. Consider smart locks for seamless check-in and streaming services for cozy nights in. When guests feel their needs are anticipated, they relax more—and leave better reviews.

5. Signature Touches

What’s the one thing guests will remember about your rental? Maybe it’s a welcome basket of local snacks, a curated shelf of books, or a cozy firepit with outdoor blankets. These small, personal touches leave a big impression and encourage word-of-mouth referrals.
